As well as producing iconic cartoons and films, Walter E. Disney also published a significant number of his titles as books. Not surprisingly Mickey Mouse was the first character to make into book format. In 1931 The Adventures of Mickey Mouse was published and proved incredibly popular with American children. First editions of this early example of Disney's animation style can now realize upwards of $5,000.
Throughout the 1930s and 40s the titles kept coming with regularity. Many of the more familiar animations were released as books to widen the potential audience of cartoon releases. This includes the Disney versions of other author's works such as Bambi (1941)and Pinocchio (1939). One of the most sought after titles today is Fantasia from 1940: a first edition can fetch over $6,000.
There is an array of lesser known Disney works out there in book format too. The Golden Touch (1937); The Reluctant Dragon (1941) and the Wise Little Hen (1937) are all archetypal Disney. With the publication of The Gremlins in 2943, Disney also collaborated with the legendary Roald Dahl.
The Disney Corporation continued to publish books after the death of Walt Disney himself in 1966, often to accompany film releases like The Aristocats in 1970.
Other books were introduced to the market with The Art of Walt Disney from Mickey Mouse to The Magic Kingdoms released in 1973. The book documents the development of Walt Disney's career, and incorporates hundreds of illustrations, staff interviews and explanations of the techniques involved in cartooning. A first edition can fetch $200 at auction.
Disney books were a key part of Walt's early work and were a significant factor in helping the iconic name become what it is today.
